. . . a mere detail

 

I've always been captivated by particular expressive passages. . . a melodic phrase, a group of trees in autumn, a section of shoreline, beautifully sequenced words of poetry and prose, a part of the human form. Salient aspects that represent a world not evenly felt or experienced.

​

In the shapes of the body I see an endless variety of emotive and meaningful forms . . . parts which are so expressive by themselves that the rest of the figure needs only a suggestion. Isolated from their context, these details invite the viewer to contemplate subtle complexities of form often overwhelmed by the impact of the whole. 

​

In my art I've found that certain experiences cannot be expressed in more comprehensive and complete works. Inspired by certain powerfully expressive fragments of ancient sculptures, my art attempts to find boundaries that isolate and emphasize an emotive section while still implying its connection to a larger whole.

​

Paradoxically, I see glimpses and hints of wholeness in these pieces of art. There is a satisfaction often missing in a finished work... a harmony of conflicting thoughts

and feelings. . . a balance of will and fate, living and inanimate, material and form, abstraction and representation, transience and permanence.
